National Indigenous Land and Sea Strategy

03 May 2019

On 1 February 2019, the ILC became the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC), with an extended remit to include the acquisition and management of interests in water as well as land.
Along with these changes came the requirement for the ILSC to replace its current National and Regional Indigenous Land Strategies with a National Indigenous Land and Sea Strategy and Regional Land and Sea Strategies (NILSS and RILSS).

The NILSS is the key policy document for the ILSC, setting out our three-to-five year strategic direction. The NILSS guides the performance and functions of the ILSC – identifying the relationships, strategies, opportunities and program mechanisms that the ILSC will use to meet its obligations under the ATSI Act (2005).

The RILSS, in turn, provide further detail on these strategic directions for each of the RILSS regions (Northern, Desert, South west and South east Australia).

The ILSC will not develop the NILSS or RILSS in isolation – the aspirations of Indigenous Australians cannot be reflected without your input.

Submissions are now being sought on the NILSS and a fact sheet and the existing NILS are available on the link below to assist you to form your input.

Your submission can be short or long, detailed or broad – please send them through to NILSSConsultation@ilsc.gov.au.

Submissions will close at 5.00pm (AEST), Friday 17 May.

In the meantime, a series of consultation sessions will be held across the RILSS regions, so please save the date of your nearest session:
