Crocodile-Welcome Station Reef Trust Program protecting the Great Barrier Reef

04 Jul 2018

The ILC’s Crocodile and Welcome Station, near Laura in Cape York, Queensland, is undertaking a four-year Reef Trust Program to improve water quality and reduce sediment entering the Great Barrier Reef.

ABC Far North caught up with the ILC’s Executive Director of Agribusiness Craig North and project partners Cape York NRM and Griffith University to discuss the program and hear about the early success in mitigating gully erosion and creating employment opportunities for local Traditional Owners.

“The Reef Trust Program is not only providing new employment opportunities for local Traditional Owners from Laura but is also protecting vitally important environmental and cultural values in and around the station and having a positive flow on effect for the water systems which feed into the Great Barrier Reef", Mr North said.

“The ILC is proud to work with our partners on the Reef Trust Program and looks forward to the ongoing success of the project”.
