Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs

The Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) is responsible for social policies and support affecting Australian society and the living standards of Australian families. While the ILC is an independent statutory authority, it is also a portfolio agency of FaHCSIA.

Caring for Our Country

Caring for our Country is the Australian government's natural resource management initiative. The initiative integrates the Working on Country Indigenous land and sea ranger program with other natural resource management programs.

Working on Country

Working on Country is part of the Caring for our Country initiative. It provides funding for Indigenous people to deliver environmental outcomes, building on their knowledge of protecting and managing land and sea country.

National Reserve System

The National Reserve System is Australia's network of parks, reserves and other protected areas which conserve native plants and animals. Building Australia's National Reserve System is one of six priorities for national investment under Caring for our Country.

Indigenous Protected Areas

Indigenous Protected Areas are part of the National Reserve System. Indigenous people manage IPAs to both protect the environment and their significant cultural values for future generations. The program has other important benefits for Indigenous people, leading to health, education, economic and social benefits.

Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts

The Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) develops and implements national policy, programs and legislation to protect and conserve Australia's environment and heritage and to promote Australian arts and culture. Caring for Our Country, Working on Country, the National Reserves System and Indigenous Protected Areas are the responsibility of departments within DEWHA.

Department of Employment and Workplace Relations

Information about DEWR's programs, initiatives and services that assist in to closing the gap between Indigenous and other Australians. The ILC works with DEWR to maximise employment opportunities for Indigenous people.

Department of Climate Change

The Department of Climate Change assists Australia to deal with the challenges and effects on the climate of atmospheric greenhouse gasses.

North Australia Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance

NAILSMA supports Indigenous land and sea management initiatives across the northern Australia, including:

  • Dugong and Marine Turtle Management Project
  • Indigenous Carbon Abatement Project
  • 'Talking Culture on Country' Program
  • Leadership, Scholarship and Communication Project
  • Indigenous Water Policy Group Project.
  • Indigenous Community Water Facilitator Network Project
  • Sustainable Water Enterprises 
  • Indigenous Partnerships North Australia 

Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

DAFFA's programs aim to  ensure Australia's agricultural, fisheries, food and forestry industries remain competitive, profitable and sustainable. DAFFA

  • encourages and supports sustainable natural resource use and management
  • protects the health and safety of plant and animal industries
  • enables industries to adapt to compete in a fast-changing international and economic environment.
  • helps improve market access and market performance for the agricultural and food sector
  • encourages and assists industries to adopt new technology and practices, and
  • assists primary producers and the food industry to develop business and marketing skills, and to be financially self-reliant.

National Native Title Tribunal

The National Native Title Tribunal helps Indigenous people pursue benefits under the Native Title Act.

The Tribunal:

  • applies a registration test to native title claimant applications
  • mediates native title claims under the direction of the Federal Court of Australia
  • provides notification of native title applications and indigenous land use agreements
  • maintains the Register of Native Title Claims, the National Native Title Register and the Register of Indigenous Land Use Agreements 
  • makes arbitral decisions about some future act matters
  • negotiates other sorts of agreements, such as indigenous land use agreements.
