How to apply to the Land Acquisition program

Indigenous organisations can apply to the ILC for assistance with land acquisition to:

  • Facilitate socio-economic development; or
  • Protect land with significant cultural or environmental heritage.

Each of these categories of assistance has a different process for applying and different requirements for applicants.

Socio-economic development

Key Requirement:

The acquisition must provide significant Indigenous training and employment benefits. Generally successful acquisitions will provide at least ten new Indigenous jobs.

Application Process:

Applications are subject to an annual call. You must submit your completed application to the ILC by 30 April, 2009. Applications received by this date will be relatively assessed.

Application Toolbox:

Cultural and environmental heritage protection

Key Requirement:

The acquisition of the land is required to protect its significant cultural and/or environmental values.

Application Process:

Submit a completed application to the ILC at any time. Applications are assessed independently on their own merits.

Application Toolbox:
  • Cultural and Environmental Heritage Protection Handbook
  • Cultural and Environmental Heritage Protection Application Form

Applicants that pass the ILC's assessment enter into a lease with the ILC of up to three years. During this time, they must demonstrate their ability to manage the property viably and sustainably. At the successful completion of the lease period, the ILC grants the property to the Indigenous group through the execution of a Deed of Grant.

What steps do I take to apply?

1. Please contact the ILC, discuss your proposal and register your intent to submit an application on Freecall 1800 818 490.

Speaking with the ILC early in the development of a project ensures sufficient time to identify the category of assistance that best suits your application and to collect the relevant information and evidence required to support it.

2. Complete an application, demonstrating that your corporation, the proposed project and property requirements meet all program criteria listed in the appropriate Handbook.

You should familiarise yourself with the contents of the Handbook. Application forms and program handbooks are available for download above.

3. Submit your application, including all supporting documents and attachments.

Applications for Socio-economic Development acquisitions must be received by the ILC by April 30, 2009.

Applications for Cultural and Environmental Heritage Protection acquisitions may be submitted at any time.
