Our Priorities

The ILC has four priorities for achieving Indigenous benefits through acquiring and managing land:

  • Socio-economic development
  • Access to education
  • Sustainable management of Indigenous-held land
  • Access to and protection of cultural and environmental values

The ILC is committed to targeting these priority areas to contribute to Closing the Gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, and to build a secure and sustainable Indigenous land base now and for future generations.

See the Land Management and Land Acquisition pages for information about applications for projects that will address these priorities.

Socio-economic development

The ILC believes that a focus on increasing training and sustainable employment is the best way to achieve its priority outcome of socio-economic development, and that a range of other benefits will flow from training and employment.

Land acquisitions and land management projects funded by the ILC for the purposes of socio-economic development must demonstrate that they will provide significant training and employment for Indigenous people.

Access to education

The ILC is engaged in strategic partnerships with Commonwealth and State agencies and other stakeholders to establish educational boarding facilities that assist Indigenous secondary students in northern Australia to access school education.

Another key ILC project, the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence in Redfern, Sydney, is providing up to 5,000 Indigenous people each year with access to educational, cultural, sporting and social services.

Sustainable management of Indigenous-held land

It is important that Indigenous people are able to achieve real benefits from their land. The ILC supports Indigenous landholders' sustainable land management through property-specific infrastructure projects and large-scale regional projects. The ILC also funds training and property planning projects to build the capacity of Indigenous landholders.

Access to and protection of cultural and environmental values

The ILC recognises the importance of land to Indigenous cultural identity and is committed to assisting Indigenous people to access and protect cultural and environmental values. The ILC's Land Acquisition and Land Management Programs assist Indigenous people to protect, restore and gain access to these cultural and environmental values.
